Most people see the Penguin Parade from the back of a grandstand, behind three hundred other tourists. We take you somewhere better.

But we don’t drive straight to Phillip Island. That would miss the point. This day is designed to unfold — craft beer and paddock-to-plate food on the Mornington Peninsula, dramatic coastal geology at Cape Schanck, waterfront seafood at San Remo, and then — when the timing is perfect, when the sun is low and the sky is turning pink — the penguins.

We leave Melbourne at 11am. No rush. The Mornington Peninsula craft brewery serves lunch with a tasting paddle — local hops, local produce, a kitchen that takes beer food seriously. Through the windows, green hills roll toward the coast.

Cape Schanck is raw. The boardwalk takes you to the edge of volcanic cliffs where the Southern Ocean crashes against rock that formed when Australia was part of Gondwana. The sound is enormous. The spray reaches your face. Your host tells you the geological story — millions of years compressed into a five-minute walk.

The bridge to Phillip Island crosses the channel at San Remo. Fresh fish and chips on the waterfront, watching pelicans dive and fishing boats return. Simple. Perfect.

Then The Nobbies — a dramatic coastal walk as the sun begins its descent. Seals on the offshore rocks. The sky changing colour every few minutes.

And then the penguins. Penguin Parade Penguins Plus viewing puts you on an exclusive beachside platform — fewer visitors, closer proximity, no crowds above you. As dusk falls, the first tiny heads emerge from the surf. Then dozens. Then hundreds. The world’s smallest penguins — barely thirty centimetres tall — waddle past you in groups, returning home from a day of fishing in the Southern Ocean.

They pass so close you can hear their flippers on the sand. They call to their partners waiting in burrows. Chicks emerge to be fed. The whole colony comes alive in the half-light of dusk.

Returns approximately 9:30pm in summer, 8:00pm in winter. Nobody speaks much on the drive home. The penguins have that effect.
