About This Experience

The Journey

Every tour operator drives the Great Ocean Road. We drive it differently — and we time it so you see the Twelve Apostles when they’re at their most extraordinary: golden hour, when the last tour bus has gone and you have the viewing platforms almost entirely to yourself.

We leave Melbourne early. The Toyota Alphard glides through the western suburbs and onto the coast at Torquay — birthplace of Australian surfing. Split Point Lighthouse stands red-capped against the Bass Strait blue, its beam still sweeping the ocean even in daylight.

Coffee in Lorne. Not a drive-through — a proper artisan pour in a town that feels more like a European coastal village than an Australian beach town. Your host knows which table has the best view.

Then the ancient world. The Otway rainforest walk takes you through towering trees older than civilisation itself. Moss-covered trunks wider than cars. Ferns that unfurl in cathedral silence. The air is different here — thick, primordial, untouched.

Lunch is at an exclusive regional restaurant overlooking the coast. Wine from the surrounding hills. Produce from farms you can see from your table. This is paddock-to-plate at its most literal.

And then the Apostles. We time our arrival for golden hour — that twenty-minute window when the limestone stacks turn from grey to honey to deep amber, and the shadows stretch across the beach like fingers reaching for the Southern Ocean. The tour buses left an hour ago. The platforms are yours.

Gibson Steps takes you sixty metres down to the beach. You stand at the base of the sea stacks as waves crash around them. The scale is humbling. The sound is overwhelming. The beauty is almost aggressive.

The return journey takes the inland route — through rolling green farmland to a family-run dairy where farmgate cheese is made the way it was a hundred years ago.
